fuorimargine – a project in support of young creative people

FUORIMARGINE offers support to the creative work of young choreographers that will be realised and completed within the Festival of contemporary dance and performative arts Autunno Danza, in Cagliari from November 22 through December 1, 2019, in co-production with TRIC Sardegna Teatro, in partnership with Ticonzero and Spaziomusica, and with a special support from Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission.

By means of a public call for entries we will select eight performers between the ages of 18 and 35 as well as a group of musicians with different educational and professional backgrounds.

Under the direction of dancer Francesca Foscarini and musicians Alessandro Olla and Fabrizio Casti, the work group will engage in improvisation and research, through an intensive process that will result in the individual and autonomous creation of a performative – both physical and musical – piece.

The last three days of residency will be dedicated to the public display of the results of the research: each performance will retain all the elements of the improvisation and dynamic research and will conceive a code for its own structure that includes physical presence in a state of flow.

THE PROJECT

FUORIMARGINE is an artist residency program aimed at facilitating and spreading creative processes in the field of improvisation practices. It also creates close connection and dialogue between the musical landscape, the use of the body and movement research.

FUORIMARGINE supports young dancers and performers interested in exploring the interaction between the various languages of movement, music, theatre, visual performative and multimedia arts, with a close tie to contemporaneity.

In the course of the project we will tackle various artistic methods through various expressive multidisciplinary aspects, reaching a final outcome that each author will present through an original performance.

We will address various themes that lead to the creation of a non codified and deliberately non defined working method; this code is nevertheless transmitted through the numerous relationships naturally interwoven into the lives of artists and the social context they live in.

The mentors will prompt authors to investigate the origin of the contemporary creative process: its first impulses; the interaction between physicality, sound and images; how each starting element stemming from each individuality influences or flows into the creative approach; what kind of aesthetic moves and affects creativity within the performance.

From the early stages of the process each author will investigate the creative process itself. The improvisation technique will be a mutual and shared practice, as well as the quest for a pragmatical approach to the artistic process: however dynamic and original, this approach must be conformed and repeatable, regardless of the theme or the suggestion that each author intends to convey.

Artist selection criteria
Eight dancers/performers will be selected for the artist residency program FUORIMARGINE, along with a consistent number of musicians and video makers.
The call for entries will be made public August 1 2019. The required material for participating will be a cv, headshots and a brief showreel of previous works.

Participants must have artistic professional training in order to tackle the theme of improvisation through a personal contemporary artistic syntax. Dancers and performers between the ages of 18 and 35 are eligible to apply.
A panel composed by FUORIMARGINE artistic direction and mentors will select the eight performers. The music mentor will select the musicians and the video makers among the students enrolled in the contemporary and electronic music course at the Conservatory of Cagliari.

Each artist will be offered 10 days of artistic residency (Days subject to variations).

Sites of residency: Ex Manifattura Tabacchi/Teatro Massimo/Cagliari – Italia

The residency

The residency program will start with a joint work session aimed at creating a cohesive work group in which specific talents are identified and addressed.

The dance mentor will guide dancers in their creative process of improvisation and movement composition, in synergy with the music mentors who will work similarly with musicians.

During this first stage, the creative relationships will be established in order to subsequently define the cooperation among dancers, musicians, video makers and photographers and thus identify the authorship for each specific autonomous path.

At a second stage, after defining eight different work groups composed of at least one dancer and one musician, each group – with its own timing and space – will autonomously develop its own research, eventually gathering in moments of collective sharing and active feedback related to the state of the creative process.
During this stage, presumably, there will be a first visible display of the works.
Mentors will keep observing, suggesting and supporting each author.

In the final stage, each group is expected to design a performance both in its themes and contents and in its formal structure. A light and sound designer will participate in this phase in order to finalise technical details in preparation for the actual performance.
